| Selecting your Keywords The first step in optimizing your site is selecting proper keywords. Keywords are the foundation of optimization process so choosing the appropriate words is critical.
Tips:
Be specific. Due to the extreme amount of competition for general terms in the search engines, you have a much better chance of receiving a higher rank with specific keyword phrases rather than general keywords. By choosing descriptive phrases you will have less competition as well as have a more target audience.
Know your audience. What would a potential visitor to your site search by to find your site? Come up with a list on your own and then ask get the input of your friends and peers. You’ll be surprised at the different approaches individuals take for finding the same thing.
Do some investigating. Do a search using keywords that you already know you want to target and click through on the top sites that come up. Once on the site view the source HTML code and view the keywords they have in their meta tags to get some ideas. Viewing the source code of a site it easy, just click on 'View' at the top of your web browser then select 'Source', or 'Page Source'.
